Like so many other Montana towns, Columbus was born primarily because of its rich base of natural resources. Beginning as a quarry town for its quality stone products, the local quarry was chosen as the supplier for stone to be used for the State Capitol in Helena. Contracts for quality stone like this one kept the quarries and railroad busy for years. Originally known only as a stopping point for stage coaches, Columbus is now a bustling community that is working hard to provide not only the necessary goods and services for its growing population, but is also focusing on economic development and bringing good jobs to the State of Montana.
